Apple Maps is now available on the web through a beta launched on Wednesday, allowing users to access driving and walking directions, ratings, and reviews from desktop or mobile browsers.

Accessible via beta.maps.apple.com, the web version offers features similar to the iOS app, including viewing guides, ordering food, exploring cities, and getting business information. Additional features like Look Around will be introduced soon.

Currently, the web-based Apple Maps supports only English and is compatible with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad, and Chrome and Edge on Windows PCs. Apple plans to add support for more languages, browsers, and platforms. Developers using MapKit JS can link to Maps on the web.

Since its 2012 launch on iPhone, Apple Maps has gradually added new features like detailed city maps, multi-stop routing, cycling directions, EV routing, and offline navigation.

Previously, developers created web versions of Apple Maps using the API for sites like DuckDuckGo. Now, its official web availability marks a significant expansion and a direct challenge to Google Maps, which has been accessible via web browsers for years.

Meanwhile, open-source alternatives like the Overture Maps Foundation, supported by Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, released their first mapping dataset for developers to use freely in their apps, adding to the competition.
