Instagram is experimenting with a significant change to profile pages by transforming the traditional square grid into vertical rectangles. Users recently noticed the test, and hints of this shift have been around since 2022. Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged in a recent story that most content uploaded today is vertical, making square cropping challenging. He explained that squares are a relic from when Instagram only allowed square photos, a limitation removed in 2015.

Mosseri understands that the change may disrupt users who have carefully curated their profiles, but he emphasizes the need to better accommodate today’s content formats. Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai confirmed the test in a statement to The Verge, noting that it’s a limited experiment and the company will consider community feedback before making further decisions.

For users who have meticulously arranged their grids, this potential shift from squares to rectangles could require adjustments in the future.
