Honda Unveils Cutting-Edge Technologies for its 0 Series at the Honda 0 Tech Meeting 2024

In a significant move toward the future of electric vehicles (EVs), Honda Motor Co., Ltd. introduced next-generation technologies set to be featured in its upcoming Honda 0 Series at the “Honda 0 Tech Meeting 2024” in Tokyo. The new EV series, which will launch globally in 2026, is built around a fresh development concept focused on “Thin, Light, and Wise,” marking a revolutionary approach to EV design and performance.

The Honda 0 Series is built from the ground up, reflecting the company’s ambition to redefine electric mobility. The series will offer five core values that promise to enhance the EV experience:

  1. Artistic design that resonates with consumers
  2. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving (AD) for enhanced safety
  3. New connected technology transforming the vehicle into a smart space
  4. The joy of driving with a seamless connection between driver and vehicle
  5. Superior energy efficiency

At CES 2024 in Las Vegas, Honda unveiled two concept models—the Saloon and the Space-Hub—as part of the Honda 0 Series lineup. The production model of the Saloon is scheduled for release in 2026, serving as the flagship of the series. Honda plans to introduce seven models globally by 2030, including options across various size categories.

New Platform and Breakthrough Technologies

During the Honda 0 Tech Meeting, the company highlighted several key innovations, including a newly developed EV platform that emphasizes efficiency and safety. Using ultra-high strength steel, a thin battery pack, and compact e-Axle technology, Honda’s EVs will feature a low center of gravity, enabling a sporty yet stable driving experience.

The “Thin” concept leads the way in creating a streamlined design with low vehicle height and short overhangs, enhancing both the vehicle’s appearance and its interior space. The “Light” development approach focuses on reducing weight while maximizing performance, contributing to top-tier electricity efficiency.

The compact e-Axle integrates the motor and inverter into a downsized package, allowing for greater cabin space and efficient energy use. Meanwhile, the thin battery pack, developed with advanced manufacturing techniques like Megacasting and 3D friction stir welding, will not only be lighter but also extend the vehicle’s range.

Active Aerodynamics and Enhanced Driving Stability

Honda is also introducing an active aerodynamic system that automatically adjusts based on driving conditions to reduce air resistance, increase downforce, and improve straight-line stability. Additionally, a new body rigidity management system will flex the vehicle’s frame for better tire load distribution during cornering, leading to a more agile driving experience. These improvements will result in a weight reduction of approximately 100kg (220 pounds) compared to earlier EV models.

Smarter Vehicles with the “Wise” Approach

Honda’s “Wise” development strategy is all about making vehicles more intelligent and adaptive. The company is developing its own operating system for vehicles, enabling ongoing updates and new features through over-the-air (OTA) updates, ensuring that Honda 0 Series EVs remain cutting-edge even after purchase.

Building on the foundation of Honda SENSING Elite, the new Honda 0 Series will offer AD/ADAS capabilities that enhance driving safety and convenience. By utilizing Level 3 automated driving technology, the vehicle can operate hands-free in specific conditions, such as traffic jams. As these technologies evolve, Honda will expand their availability to cover more driving scenarios, thanks to advancements in AI and sensor fusion technology.

Driving Joy and Enhanced User Experience

Honda is dedicated to maintaining the joy of driving, even as it advances automated systems. Through integrated vehicle dynamics control, including steer-by-wire systems, Honda aims to provide drivers with a thrilling and intuitive driving experience, where the car responds seamlessly to the driver’s input.

The Honda 0 Series will also focus on a superior user experience, with simplified in-car infotainment systems and personalized voice assistants that enhance ease of use. Advanced digital services, including a virtual ride-sharing experience using XR technology, will offer passengers new ways to engage with their vehicle and the world outside it.

Looking Ahead

Honda’s commitment to creating a new era of electric vehicles is clear, with plans to unveil the next model in the Honda 0 Series at CES 2025. This model will embody the forward-thinking technology and design concepts introduced at the Honda 0 Tech Meeting.

As Honda continues to push the boundaries of EV innovation, the company is not just shaping the future of electric mobility but is also setting the stage for smarter, more connected, and more enjoyable driving experiences.
