The Roomba Combo 10 Max is iRobot’s latest robot vacuum and mop that washes its mop, empties its bin, and refills its mopping tank, minimizing manual effort. It is also the first iRobot vacuum to support the smart home standard Matter. Available for preorder at irobot.com for $1,399.99, it ships in August and will be available in the UK for £1,499 and Europe for €1,499.

Building on the Roomba Combo j9 Plus’ retractable mopping system, the Roomba Combo 10 Max robot and Auto Wash Dock features a multifunctional dock that empties the robot’s bin, fills its water tank, cleans, and dries the mop. The dock is made with antimicrobial plastics to inhibit bacterial growth and odors.

These multifunctional docks are gaining popularity with models from Roborock, Dreame, and Eufy. They allow the robot to operate independently for about a week. Unlike competitors, the 10 Max’s dock dries the mop quickly without using hot water or air, reducing complexity and costs.

The 10 Max features Enhanced Dirt Detect with an onboard camera that spots dirt, a mop-only cleaning mode, and the same suction power as the Combo j9, which is 100 times more powerful than the i series. The camera enables AI-powered obstacle avoidance, allowing the robot to navigate around common household objects and avoid pet accidents, with a promise to replace it for free if it fails in the first year.

What is Matter?

Matter is a new smart home interoperability standard designed to provide a common language for connected devices to communicate locally in your home without relying on a cloud connection. It is built to be secure, private, easy to set up, and widely compatible.

Developed by Apple, Amazon, Google, Samsung, and others, Matter is an open-sourced, IP-based connectivity software layer for smart home devices. It works over Wi-Fi, ethernet, and the low-power mesh networking protocol Thread and currently supports over 30 device types, including lighting, thermostats, locks, robot vacuums, refrigerators, dishwashers, dryers, ovens, smoke alarms, air quality monitors, and EV chargers.

A smart home gadget with the Matter logo can be set up and used with any Matter-compatible ecosystem via a Matter controller and can be controlled by more than one with a feature called Multi-Admin.

Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and Apple Home are some major smart home platforms supporting Matter, along with hundreds of device manufacturers.
